    Put your mask on first

I often hear people express how stressed out they are. The responsibilities for a job and demands of a family can be a challenge to balance. Mothers with small children are particularly vulnerable to using all their energy for the benefit of everyone but themselves. However, being overcommitted with no time for personal desires is by no means a gender defined issue.

Ever found yourself saying yes to a request or a favor from someone and later resent that you were even asked?

Compassionate, cooperative people are very vulnerable to this malady. We certainly feel good when we help out, but the reality of time puts limits on what is possible.

Recently, in a conversation with my youngest daughter, she shared a new awareness with me. (Ever notice how wise your children are when you take the time to listen?)

She told me how she had been feeling pretty drained and was pondering all the responsibilities of home and family as she flew back to FL after a recent visit. Then the flight attendant gave the safety instructions. At the part about possible loss of cabin pressure and masks dropping from above, she heard the fight attendant say “Mothers with children put your mask on first and then assist your children” as if for the first time.

In a flash, she realized that there’s a reason why mothers need to put their mask on first...so they are capable of assisting their children. Now when she finds herself overloaded with responsibilities, she remembers to “put on her mask on first.” She told me she remembers to take care of herself first so she’ll have more of herself to give to others.

Remember, your well-being is most important if you want to continue to be of service and assistance to others. Remember to “put your mask on first!”

A revolutionary new way of harnessing the power of the sun to extract almost unlimited energy from water will be a reality within seven years.

“It would be the cheapest, cleanest and most abundant energy source ever developed,” say scientists from Australia’s University of New South Wales. “The main by-products would be oxygen and water.”

Special titanium oxide ceramics will harvest sunlight and split water to produce hydrogen fuel. The researchers say it will then be a simple engineering exercise to make a device with no moving parts to harvest the energy; and it will give off no greenhouse gases or pollutants.

“This is potentially huge, with a market the size of all the existing markets for coal, oil and gas combined,” says Professor Janusz Nowotny who, with Professor Chris Sorrell, is leading a solar hydrogen research project at the University’s Centre for Materials and Energy Conversion. The team is thought to be the most advanced in developing the cheap, light-sensitive materials that will be the basis of the new technology.
