The Importance of Self-Care

In the world in which I was raised, emphasis was given to caring for others. I was the oldest of six children with a mother who was often overwhelmed. Service to the needs of others became as natural as breathing. It still is. Does this sound familiar?

Through the years, however, I have come to realize the importance of self-care as an absolute necessity, if you intend to provide good service in the world.

At the time of an Aries New Moon it is appropriate to talk about self-care since the energies of Aries are all about self-care, self-determination, self-initiative. With an Aries Sun, you would think I'd have learned this lesson early, but Chiron in Libra closely opposes my Sun making service to others part of my essential nature. (By the way, this points out the shallowness of astrology that focuses only on the Sun's sign, but that's another article.)

In truth, unless you are feeling empowered and energized in your own life, you won't have the inner resources to give to others or worse yet, resentment will underlie whatever you give.

Self-care can mean different things to different people. To arrive at the feeling of personal satisfaction different approaches will be taken unique to each individual. You may find enjoyment by a walk in the woods, another may feel soothed by a visit to a day spa, and I find being by a body of water very healing.

Doing whatever replenishes and rejuvenates you is not selfish. It is self-loving and part of the self-care we each need to maintain our contentment with ourselves and our life.

Self-care activities may be physical (jogging) or emotional (a day at the art museum) or spiritual (a long meditation by the water). It doesn't matter. Again, this will be unique to you and where you personally draw your inspiration for living.

How well have you been maintaining your needed self-care lately? Particularly if you have a focus of service to others, you must not disregard your own needs.

Self-care is actually a means for giving clear and useful service in the world. It helps keep our life in balance, something we all need to do.

Astrological Events

NOTE: Following are general comments on the energies of each day. Your personal experience may be strongly modified by the relationship of these transits to your individual natal chart. To understand the significance of your personal experience, consult a professional astrologer.

Tuesday, April 17, 7:36 am ET - NEW MOON at 28 Aries

Just as in recent months and a number of forthcoming ones, the New Moon occurs in the late degrees close to when the Sun changes signs, indicating we are being asked to place emphasis on closure and completions. Coming at the end of Aries, perhaps you need to take initiative to complete something within the next 3 days. With Pluto in a cooperative trine to the New Moon, you have encouragement and the probability of success.

If you wish upon the New Moon (within 3 days before or after), you have the possibility of fulfillment by the time of the Full Moon. Aries New Moon wishes relate to: new beginnings, self-focus, innocence/authenticity, self-discovery, independence, courage, disengaging self-absorption.

Thursday, April 19 - Saturn goes direct at 18 Leo

Saturn speeds quickly forward zooming through the last half of Leo between now and Sept 2 when it enters Virgo. Now is the time to move forward with your creations. If you've had projects languishing unfinished or ideas you haven't yet acted upon, between now and early September you'll have assistance to focus and manage the practical aspects.

Saturday, April 21 - Mercury in Aries forms a Grand Fire trine (all three planets in a fire sign for an equal lateral triangle) with Saturn now direct in Leo and Jupiter retrograde in Sagittarius.

This is a fabulous day for coming together with others, exchanging ideas, and sharing inspiring conversation. All this fire energy is sure to spark change that leads to action. Even if you are alone today, what you ponder or read may offer encouragement and vision.

Monday, April 23 - Venus in Gemini squares Mars in Pisces

When masculine and feminine planets challenge each other in mutable signs, expect much discussion but little understanding as viewpoints may be difficult to reconcile today. Are you too attached to approval? What it means to be feminine (receptive) and masculine (assertive) are two quite different things.

Thursday, April 26 - Venus in Gemini squares Uranus in Pisces

Sexy and spontaneous! The pleasure principle (Venus) is looking for a unique (Uranus) experience. Could you try something different and enjoyable without taking a big risk?

Saturday, April 28 - Venus in Gemini opposes Jupiter in Sagittarius

Coming just two days after Venus' adventure with Uranus, her conflict with Jupiter today may leave you with an overactive desire nature. Extravagance and overindulgence may be what you find today if you don't moderate your tastes. Satisfaction may elude.

Sunday, April 29 - Mars conjoins Uranus in Pisces

A volatile day! Impassioned emotions are best used to serve in volunteer and charitable activities you believe in or righteousness indignation could go looking for a fight. Find outlet to this high energy or you could become accident prone.

Monday, April 30 - Mars in Pisces squares Jupiter in Sagittarius

Crusading enthusiasm (Mars in Pisces) driven by belief (Jupiter in Sag) can get you into trouble if you haven't paid attention to the reality of the situation. Idealistic statements about creating our own reality are meaningless to the homeless person, for example.

Wednesday, May 2, 6:09 am ET - FULL MOON at 12 Scorpio

Mercury is conjoined and parallel the Sun as it opposes the Moon producing a day of clear thinking about your values and desires. Perhaps the focus is on fulfillment of financial goals.

Saturday, May 5 - Mercury in Taurus sextiles Uranus in Pisces and squares Saturn in Leo

It is a good day for brainstorming innovations to your plans while sorting out which ideas are realistically possible. Changes are only worthwhile if they lead to success.

Sunday, May 6 - Venus in Gemini opposes Pluto in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Sagittarius trines Saturn in Leo

This is not the best day for interpersonal relationships as philosophical and religious beliefs could clash. On the other hand, short-term economic and business goals are easier to achieve under a harmonious Jupiter/Saturn aspect.

Monday, May 7 - Mercury in Taurus squares Neptune in Aquarius

When personal values and collective ideals are at odds, you could find yourself feeling disillusioned and confused. Things will be clearer in a couple days.

Wednesday, May 9 - Sun in Taurus squares Saturn in Leo

A great day for getting things done, don't expect to have fun, but use it to push on to accomplish what is most important.

Thursday, May 10 - Jupiter in Sagittarius squares Uranus in Pisces

These two planets in hard aspect to each other have been creating philosophical and social tensions between people with differing points-of-view. If you find yourself incensed by someone else's behavior, don't let yourself pontificate about the rightness of your position. Open your mind to new possibilities.

Saturday, May 12 - Mars at 29 Pisces activates the March 18 Solar Eclipse, Sun in Taurus squares Neptune in Aquarius

For those who had been affected by the March 18 Solar Eclipse, look for an important shift to be made around this time as Mars is triggering that sensitive point. The Sun/Neptune energies could leave you feeling low energy so it would be good to rest and relax today.

Sunday, May 13 - Mar in Pisces squares Pluto in Sagittarius

Instead of fighting - a natural approach if conflict arises - the higher road is to disengage and move on. It is best to let go of the need to convince others of anything or you may fall prey to those who would lie to consolidate their power.

"The test of astrology does not lie in the existence of an unequivocal connection between a forecast and its fulfillment (as in the concept of forecast in physics), but in the influence the act of consultancy has on the life of the seeker, on his ability to find useful meanings and patterns in his life story... The stories it produces are in fact grasped by the clients as a useful instrument for guidance and coping with situations of uncertainty."
