Pragmatic Mysticism

The big news this month is the last passage of the opposition between Saturn in Leo and Neptune in Aquarius on June 25. I first wrote about this in my August 2006 newsletter, but it's been affecting us since early 2006 and we won't be entirely free until summer is over.

This alignment symbolizes a time when the truth comes out and disturbs our delusions as reality crashes the party of our dreams OR our aspirations begin to find traction as we allow our inner spirit to take a practical outer form. Which has it been for you? Some of both?

The polarity between Saturn and Neptune is a subtle but powerful energy seeking to balance pragmatic realism (Saturn) with visionary mysticism (Neptune). They are two very different energies and at first glance would seem to be impossible to reconcile. That is why most people become strongly identified with one end of the see-saw more than another.

Are you highly responsible? Do the words duty, tradition, and patience have more meaning than creativity, possibility, and hope? Then you may have been riding the Saturn end of the see-saw. If the "vision thing" has been your guide as you've always hoped for a big break, then you are caught at the Neptune end of the see-saw. You may not have been willing to do the hard work to manifest your desires.

Frankly, I believe the world we live in desperately needs more pragmatic mysticism. As we move through the next several years, it will be the pragmatic mystics who will not only survive, but thrive.

My whole life has been a search for the merger of the ideal with the real, for bringing Spirit into daily Matters - thus the name of my business, Spirit in Matters. I not only believe that Saturn and Neptune can be merged, but know that life can be joyless or lacking in satisfaction without them working together.

I further believe we are at a point in human evolution when we should no longer look to the wisdom of mystics who remove themselves from temptation by going to a cave for years any more than we can rely on the prevailing wisdom of the marketplace that says your bank account total is the only measure of your happiness.

It is time to merge our spiritual values with our work in the world. We can step into our life purpose by performing useful, meaningful work that makes our heart's sing and for which we can expect to thrive financially. To do this you will need to come to terms with pragmatic mysticism - the merger of Saturn and Neptune - in your life. Now and through the end of the summer your have help!

A Quote of Note

NOTE: Following are general comments on the energies of each day. Your personal experience may be strongly modified by the relationship of these transits to your individual natal chart. To understand the significance of your personal experience, consult a professional astrologer.

Thursday, June 14, 11:13 pm ET - NEW MOON at 24 Gemini

With Mars harmonious and Pluto in opposition, this mentally active New Moon also contains a suspicious and defensive attitude. Or perhaps, it is suggesting that we not just accept appearances but go deeper into what you are experiencing. Open up the insights gained from others. With a Uranus challenge, be ready for new information to change your mind. Stay flexible. With Saturn nearing his last opposition to Neptune, it is time to become the practical mystic.

If you wish upon the New Moon (within 3 days before or after), you have the possibility of fulfillment by the time of the Full Moon. Gemini New Moon wishes relate to: motion/activity, communication skills, logic/cleverness, social ease, positive daily interactions, and calming mental anxiety.

Friday, June 15 - Mercury stationary going retrograde at 12 Cancer

Once again, it is time to relax, rethink, revise and restore ourselves by refraining, as much as possible, from initiating new projects, signing contracts or making major purchases. Happening in the family sign of Cancer, wherever you have that sign in you chart get ready for miscommunications and misunderstandings. Generically, I would double check any interactions with family and close friends to make sure that what you said is what they hear so hurt feelings don't have to be healed later. Your outer momentum will restore when Mercury goes direct again after July 9th.

Tuesday, June 19 - Venus in Leo trine Jupiter in Sagittarius

Expect a great day! Whenever the two most beneficent planets link harmoniously, there is a feeling of well-being. Since they are both in Fire signs, you may be inspired to act on those good feelings - eat, drink and be merry. Just remember, tomorrow your bank account and your scale will remind you of your excesses. Hey, you deserve to have some fun sometimes!

Thursday, June 21 - Summer Solstice, Mars in Aries trine Pluto in Sagittarius

There is a powerful energy available today and it may well provide you with the steam to accomplish much without breaking a sweat. This is especially so in the northern hemisphere where it is the longest day of the year. It may be a bit self-serving, however, so try to be mindful of those around you.

Monday, June 25 - Saturn in Leo opposes Neptune in Aquarius (last time)

As written in the main article above, we've had nearly a year to struggle with any imbalance between the use of our rational and imaginative abilities. Hopefully, you are becoming more of a practical mystic.

Thursday, June 28 - Sun in Cancer conjuncts retrograde Mercury

With retrograde Mercury bumping backward into the Sun, the usual highly mental and intellectual orientation of this day is turned inward. Perhaps you could take time to reflect and ponder those concerns you never seem to have the time to focus on. Today is the day.

Saturday, June 30, 9:49 am ET - FULL MOON at 9 Capricorn

Mars offers motivation and action to this family duty oriented Full Moon. However, it is Venus nearly conjunct Saturn and opposing Neptune that tells a major story. The Goddess of pleasure is cooperating with duty, responsibility and patience, while not surrendering the vision of better things ahead. Just don't give up hope or take on more than is yours to do.

Sunday, July 1 - Venus in Leo conjuncts Saturn, Retrograde Mercury sextiles Mars in Aries

Perhaps the call of Venus/Saturn in Leo is to ground your creative ideas with careful planning and realistic timelines. Of course, it is not yet to launch new projects until Mercury goes direct next week, but it would seem this last week of the retrograde is perfect to take time out and work on the structure of our creative ideas. What will that look like? Above all, do not despair that nothing is happening. Planning processes do not appear to be "something happening" but nothing ever will get going without it.

Sunday, July 8 - Venus Leo trines Pluto in Sagittarius

What or who are you passionate about? What or who do you believe in and value? You could find a natural opportunity or expression of that passion today.

Monday, July 9 - Mercury stations going direct at 3 Cancer

Hooray! The trickster is finally ready to open up, to move forward, to flow freely into outer expression. I would wait a couple days before buying that new computer or signing that contract but once again we can come out of our inner caves.

Wednesday, July 11 - Sun in Cancer trines Uranus in Pisces

What's new? I don't know since Uranus is a wild card, but something surely happens out of the ordinary today. Perhaps you will experience a new insight, make a new interesting acquaintance or just give in to the desire to do something different with your day.

Astro Mini-Lesson
Aspects: The Sextile

CORRECTION to last month's lesson on TRINES

I erroneously described a TRINE angle between planets as "within 82 to 98 degrees of each other." This would be correct if I was describing a square, but for a trine the degrees between planets are from 112 to 128 degrees, with 120 degrees being exact. Sorry for the error and any confusion it may have caused.

The SEXTILE: Subtle Opportunities

Another of the easy aspects, the SEXTILE offers a harmonious flow between two planets. Though subtle, if consciously used there is an opportunity to incorporate the energies of both planets cooperatively since they are in harmonious elements. Fire and Air cooperate while Water and Earth cooperate. In order to take advantage of a sextile, however, you have to give it assistance and that takes awareness.

A SEXTILE angle between two planets is exact at 60 degrees. Two planets are said to be sextile to each other when they are within 55 to 65 degrees apart.

An excess of TRINES and SEXTILES in a chart can indicate a passive stance with life unless there are other more difficult aspects. It is the difficulties we encounter that cause us to grow and evolve through life. Next month I begin describing the difficult or "hard" aspects.
