Picking at the Wounds of Another

A friend called to vent recently. I'll call her Sue. After a tirade of complaints about a mutual friend's behavior (let's call her Jane), I began to get uncomfortable. It was true, Sue's description of Jane's unwanted behavior, but why was it such a big deal to Sue? Why was she picking at the wounds of another?

I too had experience the same behavior, but as I heard it described by my venting friend, I understood it as a part of the Jane's wounding - Jane needed to commandeer everyone's attention so it was focused on her.

I have come to accept that everyone, including me, carries a wound within - some people's wounding is deeper than others. Those who are courageous and determined may heal their wound or at least begin to use it in a positive way.

In an astrology chart, Chiron represents the wound or vulnerability with which we are born. However, it also has the potential to become a strength or gift that we offer others.

Sue's challenge with maintaining her own self-confidence was the reason why Jane's bold grandstanding was a source of irritation.

I have come to realize when I get a strong reaction to someone's behavior that it is almost always due in some way to my own unhealed parts. When that happens, I reflect the focus back to me and process why I have reacted. What in me is unhealed and wanting to project that onto someone else?

You might ask - is it really always about us? I say, YES. The origin of your view of the world is the consciousness behind your eyes and that part is always making interpretations, not based on the abstract reality of what you see, but on the supposed meaning made up from within you based in part on your past experiences, painful or otherwise.

Rather than picking at the wounds of another, why not undertake healing your own wounds? Open to the truth that everyone else is wounded too and live a more joyful life? If you feel pain or even just irritation from someone else's actions use it as the gift it is to see your own place of tenderness, your wound.

A Quote of Note

"Imagination lays the tracks for the Reality Train. ...We do not need more power, magic, or wealth, but, rather, to use the abundance we already possess in conscious, imaginative ways."

--Caroline Casey, Visionary Activist and Astrologer

Astrological Events

NOTE: Following are general comments on the energies of each day. Your personal experience may be strongly modified by the relationship of these transits to your individual natal chart. To understand the significance of your personal experience, consult a professional astrologer.

Wednesday, May 16, 3:27 pm ET - NEW MOON at 26 Taurus

This Full Moon in Taurus seeks comfort, peace and stability while Neptune squaring it calls for a retreat to the security of home. New Moons are excellent times to begin new projects and this one may be urging actions to beautify and bring serenity to your home.

If you wish upon the New Moon (within 3 days before or after), you have the possibility of fulfillment by the time of the Full Moon. Taurus New Moon wishes relate to: money, sensual pleasure, contentment, perseverance, patience, self-worth, and releasing stubbornness.

Sunday, May 20 - Mercury in Gemini opposes Jupiter in Sagittarius and squares Uranus in Pisces

Thoughts and ideas may be fluid and changeable today. Others may offer perspectives that expand possibilities and open up your vision of what can be created.

Thursday, May 24 - Neptune in Aquarius is stationary going retrograde

As the planet of dreams, visions and creativity turns backward (an optical illusion itself), maximum potential for deeper spiritual awareness exists. We'll have 5 months to connect with a deeper truth that lies within each of us.

Sunday, May 27 - Mercury in Gemini opposes Pluto in Sagittarius

Getting to the bottom of things, uncovering the truth that results in transformed thinking are indicated. Beware of holding back the truth or just offering surface conversation that prevents the intimacy that is possible today.

Thursday, May 31, 9:04 pm ET - FULL (Blue) MOON at 11 Sagittarius

With the Moon conjoined Jupiter forming a happy hand shake with Mars and Saturn, there are no two ways about it - this is a time of abundance and opportunity. It's time to let go of the fears that are holding us back and trust life to take care of us. Inspiration is bountiful! I suggest a project that is begun a couple days before this date will find plenty of wind in its sails for the next two weeks.

Monday, June 4 - Mars in Aries trine Jupiter in Sagittarius

A powerful alignment is forming - a grand fire trine - beginning with Mars- Jupiter today and perfecting with Mars-Saturn aided by the Sun in a week (June 11). It's a recipe for success - one part enthusiasm (Mars), one part optimism (Jupiter) and one part hard work (Saturn). Use it to your advantage

Tuesday, June 5 - Sun in Gemini opposes Jupiter in Sagittarius

When the Sun is stretched by Jupiter, over indulgence and over-extension is always likely. A wiser use of this energy would be to take your abundant confidence and shower the generosity of your heart on others.

Saturday, June 9 - Sun in Gemini square Uranus in Pisces

Forget your routine today. Unexpected things may arise and if you try holding tight to your agenda you could end up frustrated. Open up to new possibilities and by all means remain flexible. Good things can happen suddenly too.

Monday, June 11 - Mars in Aries trines Saturn in Leo, Sun in Gemini sextiles both

See description of June 4. The energy for prudent actions that lead to success continues.

Wednesday, June 13 - Neptune in Aquarius trined by Sun in Gemini and in a sextile with Mars in Aries

The pattern in the heavens today is called a mystic triangle. The mutability of Neptune and the Sun is activated by the impulsive action of Mars equally between them. Whatever you hope for or seek to create, taking action is important. Your self-directed initiative may be all that is needed to make it happen.

Astro Mini-Lesson

Aspects: The Trine

Several readers have commented that they don't understand many of the terms used in the Astrological Events section above even though they found the general comments helpful. Therefore, this month I am beginning a series of short instructive articles that will help you better understand astrology.

We begin with the meaning of the various aspects. The term "aspect" refers to the relationship between two planets based on a mathematical division of the 360 degrees in the horoscope.

The aspects I will describe (conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines and sextiles) are called Ptolemaic aspects after Claudius Ptolemy, the 2nd century AD Greek authority on astrology and astronomy. There are many other minor aspects that I may use in chart interpretation but I do not use them in the Astrological Events section.

After looking for the meaning derived from the sign a planet is positioned in, the next meaningful information is gained by looking at that planet's relationship with other bodies or finding the aspects. Each aspect is descriptive of how the two planets relate, whether easy or challenging.

We will begin by learning the easy aspects first, like eating dessert before vegetables.

The Trine: Harmonious Status Quo

Planets that are linked in a trine relationship - within 82 to 98 degrees of each other - do not resist or conflict with each other in any way. You could say they are in a state of equilibrium with each other - there is an ease of action and lack of difficulty as when working within the status quo. They have a positive intention and an optimistic expectation that does not include a thought of failure.

However, since nothing is completely good, you must also realize that trines can represent passivity, where the energy of change is lacking and old patterns simply persist. Certainly, the trines in your chart provide a stable core to your existence, but, as you'll see as this series of mini-lessons proceed, it is the hard-aspects that encourage or compel us to grow and evolve.

Trines are aspects of harmony and offer the benefit of maintaining the status quo.
