Sun sign astrology, in fact, focuses solely on your sun sign.  To find complete information about the strength, effectiveness and success of your sun’s endeavors, however, requires knowledge of the house (or area of life) where it is placed in your particular chart and the other planets that may aspect it, for good or ill.

This information provides much more detail and personalizes your own unique experience of who you are.  So though it may be true that you are, say, an Aries, knowing that your Sun falls in the 11^th house and is in a challenging aspect with Saturn describes so much more.

Then does sun sign astrology have any validity? 

Yes, it does, but you have to remember it is rather general.  Besides the condition of your Sun at any one time, you may have opposing planetary placements that modify or cancel out that influence.
