The Cycles of Life (Darkness and Light)
Surely we are all aware of the cycles of the Moon. Personally, I always relish
the sight of the big bold full moon, drenched in the Sun’s light. Its brightness
makes even the darkness of night come alive, throwing fairy dust on the objects
it touches.
The new moon, on the other hand, allows so little light that the darkness seems
deeper and more mysterious, perhaps a bit ominous at times. Every 29 days, 12
hours and 44 minutes this cycle – new moon to full moon and back – has repeated
for eons unknown, so naturally we may not have stop to think of its implication.
If the giver of life – the Sun – and the receiver or embodiment of life – the
Moon – follow a modulating cycle of darkness and light, it is only natural that
our own lives will follow suit.
There are times when everything seems to work like a charm, things gets done
effortlessly, relationships are harmonious, we’re at peace with ourselves. And
there are other moments when nothing clicks, we feel frustrated at every turn
and life doesn’t seem worth the effort. Enter depression and despair.
It is my observation that when I give in to the cycle of the moment knowing that
it will not last, I am rewarded with more contentment no matter what is
happening externally. In actual practice, how would this look?
If everything is abundant and exciting, I remember to be thankful for the
moment. Rather than fearing that it will end, I acknowledge that this cycle will
transition eventually to a less productive time, so I make the best of the
moment.
By the same token, at those times when I feel withdrawn, confused or in despair,
I also remember that “this too will pass.” Rather than resist, I relax and wait
knowing that this is only a cycle that will transition eventually into a
happier, more productive time.
What cycle are you in? Are you making the best of it? If you would like more
insight into the specifics of your personal cycle and its timing, you can always

whether it feels like a time of darkness or light.
